An Introvert’s Guide to Socializing
Some of us are predominantly extrovert’s - we thrive in large groups, love being around people, are naturally outgoing, and are very expressive. Others are predominantly introvert’s - we refuel alone, thrive in smaller groups, can be shy, and are slower to open up. Neither are bad or better than the other. In actuality, most of us are a mix between the two. For those who are predominantly introverted, the idea of socializing can be somewhat daunting. But instead of giving up for good, try implementing a few practices that will allow you to socialize at your own pace. Here’s a few things I like to do.
As introverts, we generally do not feel heard or understood in large groups. Reach out to someone you want to connect with, make plans, and then just do it. Connecting with someone one on one will be a lot less daunting than attending a huge get-together. And after you’ve connected with people one on one, it will become easier to hang out with them in larger groups.
Set Boundaries Not Brick Walls
Be selective about who you spend time with. It’s okay to have healthy boundaries, and it’s okay to say no, but don’t use this as an excuse to block people out. Investing in relationships is important, and yes we can only make time for so many people. Although this is true, as introvert’s we have to be even more intentional about reaching out and meeting up.
Socialize then Refuel
After meeting one on one, attending a birthday party, or socializing outside of your comfort zone, take time to refuel. Sit alone in silence, read a book, catch up on your favorite show, go on a solo walk or write in your journal. Know yourself, your boundaries and your limits and embrace who you are as an introvert. Because it is a beautiful thing, and you have full permission to be exactly who you are! Read more about embracing your authentic self in my free mini e-book, EMBRACE.
